Basement With A Purpose

THE FOUNDATION:

Call it Christmas cheer, holiday spirit, or just good old-fashioned community service, all of us at Epp Concrete felt a need to give back this past year. In October 2017, we came together as a company with the idea of gifting someone a free basement repair. Our president, Dave, offered to pay everyone who would be willing to pitch in on this potential project. But that’s not what giving back to this community is about, and we told him as a group we wanted to do this on our dime. We’ve received so much from this community and truly love being able to make a difference for families that it just felt like the way to go.

THE GAMEPLAN:

We began teasing the project on social media before it launched to generate some buzz and get people thinking about how they could participate with us. Our idea was simple: get people to nominate someone they know and tell their story through social media. Then, we’d open the finalists to vote, and we’d go live on Facebook with the winner’s story.

THE EXECUTION:

After receiving several nominations over two months, we narrowed it down to our top 3 candidates. We opened up voting on the top 3 for a couple of weeks. After a close race, we found our winner: Joy Mullendore.

JOY’S PLAN:

Joy has always put her family before her own needs. Her family calls her the most selfless person they know, and someone who deserves a healthy home. Joy was diagnosed with Stage 3 lung cancer and can’t afford to fix her home. Joy’s granddaughter and her family have moved in to help with her care while Joy’s daughter continues to work full-time to assist with financial need. The house is a 3-4 bedroom home and is currently occupied by 4 adults and 5 children ranging from a couple of months old to 14 years. As the house is now, with an unsafe basement, the family doesn’t have the room to house everyone comfortably. This home is important to keep in this family as it was passed down from Joy’s mother, who purchased the home in 1967. They want nothing more than to be able to keep the home in the family and keep it updated and cared for. With the basement repairs now on the way, the family will be able to spread out throughout the house.

THE SURPRISE:
