Exterior waterproofing installs a membrane on the outside of the foundation wall, paired with drain board and a footing drain, to stop water before it contacts the wall. Interior waterproofing installs a drain channel and sump system inside the basement to capture water that has entered or is entering at the cove joint, then routes it out before it can flood the floor. Exterior is more comprehensive and more expensive; interior is faster, less disruptive, and appropriate for most residential situations where the source is hydrostatic pressure rather than active wall failure.

A French drain is a perforated pipe buried in gravel, sloped to daylight or a sump, that intercepts groundwater before it builds up against the foundation. An exterior French drain at the footing is the backbone of most exterior waterproofing systems. An interior French drain (drain-tile) does the same thing inside the basement, below the slab at the cove joint, and routes water to an interior sump.

Interior drainage installation can be done year-round. We work inside the heated basement regardless of outside temperature. Exterior excavation is weather-dependent and typically scheduled for the frost-free season (April, November in our region).
